German Curia Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes dies

Vatican City - He came from the archdiocese of Paderborn and later made a career in the Vatican: Now the retired Curia Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes has died. He would have celebrated his 90th birthday in September.

The emeritus German Curia Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes is dead. As the newspaper "Die Tagespost" reported, citing curial circles, Cordes died on Friday morning at the age of 89.

Cordes was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Paderborn in 1961 and worked there as an auxiliary bishop from 1976. In 1980, Pope John Paul II appointed him Vice-President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. In 1995, he was appointed President of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum" and was created Cardinal in 2007. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation. (tmg)
