The Republican candidate Donald Trump has won the US presidential election. According to the latest count, he has a virtually unassailable lead over his Democratic rival Kamala Harris. The Fox News channel was the first major media organisation to announce Trump's victory on Wednesday morning.

Post-election polls conducted by Fox News in collaboration with the Associated Press news agency show that Trump performed particularly well among Christian voters. According to the poll, he achieved 60 per cent among Protestants nationwide and 54 per cent among Catholic voters. Among Jewish and Muslim voters, however, Harris was ahead with more than 60 per cent each.

"Greatest political movement of all time"

At an appearance in Florida, Trump declared himself the winner of the election in advance to the cheers of his supporters: "I thank the American people for the extraordinary honour of being elected the 47th President." He spoke of the "greatest political movement of all time" and announced that he would "heal" the deeply divided country.

Several heads of state and government from around the world, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, congratulated the 78-year-old. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) joined in and wrote on the online platform X: "Germany and the USA have been working together successfully for a long time to promote prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to do so for the benefit of our citizens." (tmg/KNA)
