Vatican City - Ox, donkey, seagulls? Technology is now being used to prevent the latter from getting out of hand in the Vatican cot in St Peter's Square. Feathered visitors should particularly like this year's display.

Two ultrasound devices are to protect this year's Vatican nativity scene in St Peter's Square from seagulls. This was announced by the Governorate of Vatican City on Tuesday. The number of seabirds in Rome has been increasing for years. A laser beam is temporarily in use in front of St Peter's Basilica to scare away the feathered visitors.

The nativity scene, which will be inaugurated on 7 December, should be particularly appealing to them, as it depicts the Grado lagoon. The city is located at the northernmost end of the Adriatic Sea and is home to a diverse flora and fauna. The numerous bird species of this region can also be found in the Vatican cot - albeit completely immobile from the 3D printer. (KNA)
