A new park in honour of Pope Francis is to be built in the north of the Lisbon metropolitan region, where World Youth Day events were held in 2023. According to media reports, the authorities in the city of Loures, which borders the Portuguese capital Lisbon, have already planned the grand opening of the Pope Francis Park for February 2025.

The project is to be realised in collaboration with the Portuguese government, according to reports. Ricardo Leão, Mayor of Loures, also expressed the hope that the Pope Francis Park would attract both residents of the metropolitan region and tourists from all over the world in the future.

World Youth Day as an impulse

According to the city administration, World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon has significantly increased Portugal's visibility. The mayor of the capital, Carlos Moedas, emphasised that the locations in Lisbon associated with the event are very popular with tourists.

According to the Portuguese government and business associations, 2024 was a record year for tourism. More than 30 million foreign tourists visited Portugal. The Lisbon metropolitan region attracted the most visitors. (KNA)
