After the doctors cancelled their cautious prognosis, Pope Francis spent a quiet night in hospital. The Vatican press office announced on Tuesday that the sick head of the Church woke up at around 8am.

The previous evening, Vatican sources had reported that the Pope's life was no longer in acute danger due to his respiratory illness. The picture of his illness is still "complex". However, blood values and other parameters show that he is responding well to medical treatment. This will have to be continued for "a few more days". The Pope is receiving medication and is still being ventilated.

Pope Francis has been in the Gemelli Clinic in Rome since 14 February due to a complicated respiratory illness with bilateral pneumonia. After several life-threatening respiratory crises in the first few weeks - the most recent of which occurred on 3 March - his condition has increasingly stabilised over the past week or so, according to the Vatican. Medical bulletins have been reporting a slight improvement for several days. (KNA)
