Press report casts doubt on Vatican trial against Cardinal Becciu

Rome - For years, the Vatican criminal trial against Cardinal Becciu over a property deal in London made headlines. The judgement at first instance was handed down in December 2023. But now there are doubts about the trial.

There may have been significant irregularities in the spectacular Vatican trial against Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu and other defendants. According to a report in the newspaper "Domani" (Monday), important information was passed on to a witness for the prosecution during the preliminary questioning of witnesses. This was part of a plot against Becciu and the other defendants.

On 16 December 2023,Becciu was sentenced to five and a half years' imprisonment for fraud, embezzlement and other offences, which he appealed against. The appeal trial is scheduled for December.

Becciu reacted to the latest publication by saying: "The revelations confirm what I said from the beginning." During the trial, Becciu emphasised his innocence and spoke of a plot against his person. (KNA)
