Prevost can become for the USA what Wojtyla became for Poland

Bonn - Donald Trump is delighted about the election of a fellow countryman as Pope. But does the US president really have reason to rejoice? Few churchmen have been more critical of the policies of this US government than Leo XIV, comments Felix Neumann.

In a way, Pope Leo XIV is the first "digital native" on the See of Peter - at least by papal standards. While under Benedict XVI. and Francis, the papal Twitter account was operated by the Vatican media people, albeit with a personal touch but still professionally, the new pope is the first to have actually tweeted himself. Time for his account, which has existed since 2011 account "@drprevost" (short description: "Católico, agustino, Obispo", "Catholic, Augustinian, Bishop"), which has existed since 2011, since his appointment as Prefect of the Episcopal Dicastery.

This makes it all the more interesting to see what Prevost did have time for: he posted a total of five messages on X in 2025, and in 2024 he didn't have time to tweet at all. "JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others", reads the first message; a link to an opinion piece in the liberal US magazine "National Catholic Reporter" on the debate as to whether the US Vice President is right that Christians should think of their own people first and only think of strangers at the very end. Shortly afterwards, another link, this time to the Jesuit magazine "America" on the same topic. Then, two prayer and recovery wishes for Pope Francis, and then the last X message before his election as Pope: on 15 April, Prevost will once again be talking about US politics. A "repost". He shares a Vatican journalistwho refers to an article by Washington Auxiliary Bishop Evelio Menjivar. He compares the Passion of Christ with the suffering of migrants and refugees under the current US administration.

"God loves you, and evil will not prevail!" were the first words of Leo first words of Leo XIV after his election. He stands for "a church that always seeks peace, that always seeks charity, that always tries to be especially close to those who suffer". Does US President Donald Trump already realise what Prevost's election means for him? On his home network "truth.social", Trump appeared Trump was unusually conventionalIn a message, he congratulated his compatriot on his election as Pope and emphasised the great honour for the nation. No erratic capitalisation, no breathless assertions, no insults as usual - as if he was hoping to make up for Francis' incendiary letter. incendiary letter from Francis against his policies with the new.

Yet this Pope Leo XIV has the potential to paint on the wall for Trump's regime what the election of John Paul II meant for Poland's communist regime. The Pope has no divisions. He has something much more powerful: hope for decency, freedom and justice against resentment, oppression and persecution. By electing this US-American as Pope, the cardinals have sent a strong signal in favour of this.
