Vatican: Published documents on the Traditional Latin Mass incomplete

Vatican City - The celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass is a bone of contention in the Catholic Church, especially since Francis significantly restricted it in 2021. Alleged documents on this decision have now emerged - the Vatican is playing it down.

The Vatican has commented on the documents recently published by a journalist from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on the Traditional Latin Mass. "I do not confirm the authenticity of the published texts, which are presumably part of one of the documents on which the decision is based," papal spokesperson Matteo Bruni told journalists on Thursday. The documents are said to be parts of a summary of the survey in the universal Church that Pope Francis referred to when restricting the Traditional Latin Mass in 2021.

The texts that have now been published provide a very partial and incomplete reconstruction of the decision-making process, Bruni continued. In addition to the aforementioned survey, further documents, other confidential reports and further consultations were later added, which were sent to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
