Pineapple on pizza not a sin?

Scurrilous commercial: Pizza delivery man goes through the Holy Door of St Peter's Basilica

Bonn/Vatican City - Passing through the Holy Doors in Rome is one of the central elements of the Holy Year. A US pizza chain has now capitalised on this – and wanted to acquire a general indulgence for a controversial pizza.

The "most controversial food in the world" has been given an indulgence: "Pineapple on pizza is no longer a sin", says an advert released by the Domino's pizza chain on Tuesday. The video shows a man in the chain's blue polo shirt walking along Via della Conciliazione to St Peter's Basilica with an open cardboard box. The destination: the Holy Door in St Peter's Basilica.

2025 is a Holy Year and whoever goes through the Holy Door will have all their sins forgiven, the advert says. "So we did the only logical thing: we delivered a pizza with pineapple through the Holy Door into St Peter's Basilica." The advert shows the moment when the Domino's employee passes through the Holy Door with the box. The conclusion: "Pineapple on pizza is no longer a sin!"

Founder is a Catholic

During the Holy Year, believers have the opportunity to receive a general remission of their sins. However, simply passing through the Holy Doors is not enough: Believers must be "purified through the sacrament of penance and strengthened by Holy Communion", according to the guidelines of the Apostolic Penitentiary, which is responsible for indulgences and the system of grace.

The Domino's pizza chain has a close connection to the Catholic Church: its founder, the US American Tom Monaghan, has always been a convinced and practising Catholic. He even founded his own town for Catholics in the US state of Florida. Its name: Ave Maria. Incidentally, the US chain was unable to establish itself in Italy. All remaining branches were closed in 2022. It's not said to have been due to pineapple on pizza. (cbr)
