Published on 03.11.2025 at 10:54 –The historic Carthusian monastery of Mont-Dieu in the Ardennes has been largely destroyed in a fire. "There was a lot of wood in this building: there is no more roof, no more floor, only the walls are still standing," Anne Fraipont, mayor of the village of Tannay-le-Mont-Dieu, told the AFP news agency on Sunday. The monastery was the "Notre-Dame" of the region.
Walkers had noticed the fire in the remote building and called the fire brigade. The former monastery was founded in the 12th century and the buildings were given their current appearance in the 17th century. The buildings are now in danger of collapsing. The cause of the fire is not yet known. (cph)
